For thousands of years the production and sale of argan oil was in the control of the women. They make a delicious roasted version of the oil as well as an unroasted cosmetic form. They sit laboriously for hours hand cracking each nut, stone grinding it into paste, and then kneading the dough until the oil can be hand squeezed out. Finally being recognized as a valuable anti-aging oil, companies from Germany to Japan to Italy have flown in to take over control of the oil from the women. They have now set up machines to replace the women's work, thus causing loss of income to hundreds of women. Shea Terra Organics' founder, Tammie Umbel chose a particular cooperative of women in Morocco who are still producing a very high quality oil by hand. This process also insures that the oil is produced at a much lower temperature than machines and no chemicals are introduced into the process. How can you tell if argan oil is 100% pure?

We are well aware that there are companies that dilute argan oil. The oil is even diluted straight from sources inside Morocco. There is no absolute way of telling whether an oil is diluted or not. However, knowing the characteristics of argan oil helps. The oil should never be cloudy (it might be a little cloudy if it gets too cold). It should be golden in color, a little on the brown side but should not be clear or olive in color. It should have a distinct smell like soured milk mixed with almond. The odor is quite strong. It should not be greasy on the skin; it should absorb right in.

How can you sell your argan so inexpensive?

We buy this oil directly from a women's cooperative in Morocco. We do not pay middle men. But the real truth is that companies are ripping customers off with their artificially high argan oil prices. While the oil is one of our more costly oils to buy, it is not THAT costly. It takes a lot of argan nuts and a lot of labor to make a small bottle of argan oil, but again, the oil is not so expensive as to warrant prices of $40-$60 per two oz.

Years ago Shea Terra Organics crashed shea butter prices from over $100 a lb. to down to $4 a lb. Middle men were price gauging shea butter prices for a product that was extremely inexpensive straight out of Africa. Tammie felt these prices were unfair to consumers and did not benefit the African women who made the butter. They had plenty of supply, but because some greedy people tried to make huge profits off of their butter, demand for their butter was very low which meant that thousands of women were losing out on the opportunity to support their families. The same situation exists here with pure argan oil.

How does Tammie know that her argan oil is 100% pure?

Tammie visited several cooperatives in Morocco. She looked at methods of extraction and compared several qualities of cosmetic grade argan oil. She chose her supply group according to the quality of the oil and the commitment the cooperative had toward their members.
